SVG Rugby Prevails in Barbados
Kevin Bailey, judged “man of the tournament” came away from the tournament with 5 tries and left many people wondering if they were seeing the future of West Indies rugby play that weekend. In addition, great play was exhibited from Scott Hadley who dazzled the crowd with his rocket passing and blazing side-steps. Hadley had 2 tries in the tournament. Following close behind were Sam McManis and Justin Tittle, both played excellent defense and contributed greatly to the effectiveness of the offense. Also invited to compete in the tournament was the SVG under-16 national team. Playing ten-a-side, the boys continued there sound preparation for the West Indies under-16 tournament to be held at Arnos Vale Stadium in late August. The boys of SVG punished their compete ion walking away undefeated, capping the Vincentian sweep of Barbados. Voted “man of the tournament” for SVG under-16 was Hollis Green of San Souci. Green exhibited his tremendous speed over the weekend, overwhelming the competition at times. Also making notable contributions to the team were Lorson Lewis of Barrouallie, Tershun Edwards and Kemi Francous. Vincentian Youth Rugby Player to Attend World Scholar Athlete Games Hollis Green of San Souci, the dazzling wing for the SVG under-16 national team will be attending the 2001 World Scholar Athlete Games to be held in Kingston, Rhode Island, June 22-July1. Green a young man who has shown tremendous potential both on the rugby pitch and on the track, will be representing St. Vincent and the Eastern Caribbean when he goes north at the end of this month. Green who was identified by a local Peace Corps volunteer, has been granted a full scholarship to attend the games by the Institute for International Sport. “This is an amazing opportunity for Hollis to display his talents and also help promote rugby here on StVincent”, says youth coach and Peace Corps volunteer Isaak Egge.

This showed the team that they could compete with some of the best teams within the region and has played a major in building the legitimacy of rugby within Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. St. Vincent Rugby Union Under
16 team returned from
Trinidad and Tobago on Monday night with their heads held high, after
participating in the inaugural under 16 ten a side rugby competition,
organised by the revitalised West Indies Rugby Union in Trinidad and
Tobago last weekend. Within
three months of learning to
play the game, the team had competed at the highest level against far
more experienced opposition from Venezuela, Jamaica, Guyana, Trinidad
and Tobago and Martinique. |
